Throughout the weekend I will be using Blogger to capture notes and thinking from the GAFE Ontario Summit. Looking forward to learning, connecting, and sharing!

In his opening remarks, +Mark W. Carbone shared the following:
What matters most is what we do next.

This speaks to the impact shared movements can have on building capacity. It's the 'we' factor. The power of learning with and from each other to create sustainable change. This is the feel of the Summit. 

What's my story? 
In her Keynote address, Rachel Wente-Chaney reminds us that it is not the app that is revolutionary. It's the people. People "Google searching for good". Using technology to transform and inspire. Telling our unique stories in new, and connected ways and modelling this process for of our students.

Session 1: Powerful Flipped Videos That Teach ... and Assess

Thinking about brain research ... importance of rehearsal and repetition to foster deep learning.

TIPS:
- accept imperfection when creating your own videos
- create a presentation using Google and use TechSmith Snagit extension to record video
Next Steps:
- Create my own youtube account to facilitate sharing

Session 2: Inquiring Minds Want to Know

Curricular Inquiry 
- "open up the ___ can of worms"
- Like a KWL chart ... focus on "what I want to know"
vs Open Inquiry
- "Imagine what YOU want to learn?"
- teacher as facilitator

Rules of Good Search:
- order of the words matters
- uppercase doesn't matter (punctuation very little too)
- little words can make a huge difference [who]  [a who]
Filtering:
- 'black and white' for more simple graphs
- filter by colour for more exact results
Custom Search:
- AMAZING tool to support students with safe searching

Session 3: Chrome Apps, Extensions, and Add-Ons, Oh my!

Boomerang: extension for gmail that allows you to have emails sent at a later date ore re-send messages to your inbox

This past week I attended a PD session facilitated by  Peter Liljedahl   entitled Building Thinking Classrooms. Two things I noticed right away: 1) No mention of the word mathematics in the title. It's about the thinking. 2) Participants were tossed into the role of learners. It's about the students. Puzzle Cube Project: Spatial Reasoning & Design Thinking

The first 6 weeks with our 3D printer centered around experimentation and debugging. We familiarized ourselves with TinkerCad, conducted research, and spent many hours grappling with our failed prints and mishaps. With our new motor installed, and heightened appreciation for the functionality of this amazing tool, we got started on our first design project. I brought a few wooden mind puzzles into the classroom for interest and relaxation, but also for their value in developing spatial reasoning. They provided us with the inspiration we needed for our first project! My purpose for integrating 3D printing in the classroom stems from a curiosity of students' spatial reasoning abilities and how designing and creating in a virtual 3D world might enhance their thinking. [Summer Reading] Comprehension and Collaboration: Inquiry Circles in Action

"And today, fresh discoveries in cognition, inquiry, and collaboration show us even betters ways to help learners engage with ideas and drive each others' thinking- not just to remember information, but to build knowledge, to care, to act" (Harvey and Daniels, 2009, p. 7). How does what I know about teaching and learning in primary apply to the intermediate division? What structures and supports are necessary in the classroom environment to evoke the kind of thinking required for learning? My own "puzzle drive" led me to this book written by Stephanie Harvey and Harvey Daniels.  It came highly recommended by  @JennyLoebsack , a friend and mentor who I consider to be an inquiry-guru! What struck me instantly about this text, is the manner in which theory and practice are examined and explored. The authors share information and their own thinking in a highly conversational way. Part 1 lays the foundation, explains the why , of small group inquiry projects.
